With the 72 Hours unlimited use of the entire Dublin Bus
fleet you can really get out there and visit Dublin. In this
section we'll provide information on places to visit on the
Dublin Bus route map.

Week 1 is Howth Harbour
Getting there:
Take the 31/a bus from Talbot Street.
Things to do:
Howth Market is home to an array of Irish crafts, delicate handmade jewellery, and vintage
antiques; perfect for gift shopping. While you’re there, be sure to sample the wide selection
of organic foods on offer, like olives, cheeses, nuts and of course, delicious chocolate and
cupcakes. Or if you’re feeling peckish grab a burger, stir-fry or gooey pastrami melt sandwich
for a picnic.
Less than a ten-minute walk from the market, you’ll find Howth Castle and Grounds.
Immerse yourself in history and take in the beautiful surrounding gardens, which are
home to a ten-metre high hedge and the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. Also in the castle,
you’ll find restored Georgian kitchens, where cookery school The Kitchen in the Castle
host half-day and evening classes.
In the evenings, pubs like The Abbey Tavern and The Bloody Stream host live music,
dancing and comedy events.

Great walks:
From the harbour to Howth Head, there’s something for every level of walker in this
fishing village. Try the Bog of Frogs Loop for scenic views of the cliffs, Lambay Island
and the Baily Lighthouse. There are four route options, so once you disembark the
DART, look out for signs displaying directions. For something a bit gentler, take a stroll
down the pier. From here you can take in the views of Ireland’s Eye, a beautiful island
that’s just a 15-minute boat ride away. Explore its long sandy beach, take in breath-taking
views of Dublin Bay, go bird-watching, see a Martello Tower up close or even try your
hand at fishing.
Places to eat:
Seafood, of course, takes centre stage in the many pubs and restaurants of Howth.
Try The Brass Monkey for seafood tapas and wine, or head to the nearby Oar House
Fish Restaurant, where food is so fresh, it’s still swimming in a glass tank when you
arrive! At the very end of the pier you'll find Aqua, another restaurant specialising in
seafood, offering stunning views of Ireland's Eye while you dine in style. But before
you commit to a location, why not take a walk along the pier and down the town centre
and check out the many menus on offer? If seafood isn’t your thing, the aforementioned
Abbey Tavern, where many music and comedy legends started their careers
performing, has plenty of hearty beef and lamb dishes. Or head to quirky Dog House
Blues Team Rooms for pizza, fresh from the wood-fire stove. They’ve a delicious
selectionof teas on offer too and with their cosy couch set-up, you won’t want to leave.
Walk & eat:
For tasty take-out fish and chips, stop by Beshoffs, a much-loved Dublin institution,
or stall by the van at the West Pier harbour. We recommend you sample their calamari,
and afterwards, stroll along the seafront for an ice-cream and take it down the pier.
The perfect combo!
Of course, great food doesn’t begin and end here. There’s lots more to be explored
in Howth, both online and on foot.

The Freedom Ticket is Dublin's Most Popular Transport & Sightseeing Travel Pass.

The Freedom Ticket is our best value product and offers huge savings while providing for all your transportation needs.
How Does the Ticket Work?
The Freedom Ticket combines the Leap Visitor Card with a 48 Hour Hop-on Hop-off tour. The Leap Visitor Card's 72 hour duration activates from the first time you use it. Simply hold the card up to validators* provided on all the transportation listed. Once you hear the tone you know you've activated the card correctly.
*Note;
For the Luas (tram) network you will find a validator on the platform beside where the tram stops. (no need to tap off once you leave the tram).
Similarly for the Dart and Commuter trains, you must touch on at the validators you will find at the entry gate. - no need to tap off again. Please note, the card is only valid for short hop journeys, which covers Dublin city and county only.

Darkey Kelly was an infamous brothel keeper from Dublin in the 18th century who
ran the notorious Maiden Tower brothel off Fishamble St. There are a number of
different stories about Darkey. In one she was the lover of Simon Luttrell who was
a member of the spooky Hellfire Club in Dublin. He was also the Sherriff of Dublin
at the time and he claimed that she killed their newborn child in a black magic
ritual after looking for money off him. No body was ever found though. However,
there were at least six bodies of local craftsmen found in the cellars of her brothel!
She was partially hung and then burned alive at the stake on Baggot St. Whatever
her real story was, we will probably never know as the Sherriff ensured that she
would never speak. Whatever was going on, it led to riots afterwards in the city
by the girls from her brothel.

Grave Robbers
The medical schools of the 18th and 19th centuries thought nothing of hunting for fresh
bodies in Dublin, proving once again that doctors are an odd bunch. Medical students
at the time often robbed graves to get extra money to pay for their studies. The Bullys’
Acre or Hospital Fields at Kilmainham was a popular spot. Soldiers attached to the
nearby Royal Hospital were always on the alert for grave robbers mainly because
many of their comrades were buried there.

Debtor's Prison
Black Dogs was the fitting name of the notorious debtors prison in the Coombe area of
Dublin. This is where they kept people who could not pay their bills. There was no need
for judges here as your length of stay was determined by the person you owed money
to. So, if you had managed to get in debt with a competitor you could find yourself in
trouble. One of the main problems with the Black Dog was that you had to rent your bed
for the night. If you could not afford it then they put you in the dungeon which had no light
apart from what made its way in through the sewer and the iron grilles at street level.
Prison food? That was a thing of the future. The Black Dog was also notorious because
of one of its jailers, John Hawkins. He was as cruel as Lord Norbury (see below) and was
eventually convicted of corruption. He had the habit of using the cells for imprisoning people
that he took a dislike to until they eventually got their relatives to pay for their release. Nice!

The Hanging Judge
John Toler was Ireland’s most hated man in the 1700s. First of all he was a judge, which
meant that he was always going to find it hard to win a popularity contest. He made matters
worse for himself with his cruel streak. One story has it that he was on a carriage journey
back from a country court when his footman fell ill. Toler refused to stop and rushed the
carriage onwards to Cabra. When the poor lad eventually died, Toler pushed the body
out and carried on home for his dinner.
Despite this he managed to gain the title of Lord Norbury, which must have doubly annoyed
lots of people. It wasn’t as if he was a good judge either. His courts were so disorganised
that they were constantly referred to as a circus by other judges. Toler’s habit of falling
asleep in court was never going to go down well but the fact that he was so keen on
handing out the noose as a sentence meant that he became notorious.
It was the hanging of Irish revolutionary Robert Emmet which catapulted him into public
enemy number one position. When he died, he returned as a black dog that they say still
haunts the streets of Dublin. This is obviously not the type of guy to have in the hostel
kitchen sorting out whose turn it is to wash up.

Patrick Dunphy was a farmer convicted of the murder of his two sons, Eddie who was
nine and John who was eleven. On the 27th September 1899, he poisoned one son with
strychnine; and on 17th December, he despatched the other in a similar fashion. He
committed the crimes in order to claim a small amount of insurance money.
There was a widespread belief that Dunphy would be reprieved because the execution
coincided with a visit to the country by Queen Victoria, but the Home Secretary refused
because of the cold-blooded nature of the crime.
Hanged by Thomas Scott; it was the first execution in Waterford for 36 years. The execution
of thirty four year old Dunphy took place on the 10th April 1900.

Dubliners Abroad
Catherine Flannagan (1829 – 3 March 1884) and Margaret Higgins (1843 – 3 March 1884)
were sisters from Dublin who were convicted of poisoning and murdering one person in
Liverpool, Lancashire, England and suspected of more deaths. The women collected a
burial society payout, a type of life insurance, on each death, and it was eventually found
that they had been committing murders using arsenic to obtain the insurance money.
Though Catherine Flannagan evaded police for a time, both sisters were eventually
caught and convicted of one of the murders; they were both hanged on the same day at
Kirkdale Prison. Modern investigation of the crime has raised the possibility that Flannagan
and Higgins were known or believed by investigators to be only part of a larger conspiracy
of murder-for-profit—a network of "black widows"—but no convictions were ever obtained
for any of the alleged conspiracy members other than the two sisters.

Vincent is the quintessential bad guy, you may see him on one of his many tv roles,
but usually he's cast as the baddy and this is because the role comes so easily to
him. He'll usually keep you laughing throughout the ghostbus tour, but a word of warning,
be careful not to get on his bad side, you wouldn't like him when he's angry!

Sebastian is the newest Ghostbus tour storyteller. He began his career as a Shakesperian
actor but his obsession with the dark and sinister side of life led him towards the
Ghostbus Tour, and it here he found his spiritual home. He lives to make spines tingle and
hairs stand on end, and in the tradition of all good Shakespearian plays, he still loves
a good tragedy!

Nick is the longest serving Ghostbus storyteller and the most experienced in revealing
the Dark side of Dublin city. No one knows when he began...but some say he has in fact
always been on the ghostbus and now rarely ever leaves it.

Christ Church Cathedral is one of Dublin's most iconic buildings both for its beauty and for its rich history which dates back to the 11th century. Known around the world for its beauty, stunning architecture, and beautiful floor tiles, Christ Church Cathedral is also home to a 12th Century crypt - one of the oldest and largest in Britain and Ireland. The restored 12th-century crypt is home to the stunning Treasures of Christ Church exhibition.
